Fear
of Public Speaking is the # 1 Fear in America! If not the WORLD! It's even more feared by more people than the
fear of Death(# 2) or the fear of Snakes (#3)! The scientific word for fear of Public Speaking is GLOSSOPHOBIA.

The fear could be of speaking to a few people or a large audience.
It could even be people you work with on a regular basis, or even family and friends. . The dreaded
talk may be a business presentation, a few words at a wedding or funeral, a book report in school, a club meeting, testifying
in court, even a career day at your child’s third grade class. People just like you have told
me it’s not just the talk, but the problem usually starts even before the talk. It may be in the
form of pre speaking anxiety. For many people, it starts as soon as they find out they’re going to
have to talk to a group of people. And then it interferes with their sleep the night before, and maybe
several nights! And then there’s the physical
symptoms: - Sweaty palms or under arms, even sweaty face
- Blushing, even feeling like you may faint!
- Elevated blood pressurePounding heart
– so loud you KNOW the audience has to be able to hear it!
- Nausea – upset stomach
And of course there’s also the dreaded: - Racing thoughts
- Being afraid you’re going to forget what to say
- And of course, what if you trip and fall, or push over
the podium into the audience and crush someone?
And then AFTER
the talk: - The second guessing
- What did they think?
- What if I did so badly I’m going to be fired, or kicked out of the club?
- Or for some people, even worse – what if I did so
good and get asked to do it again.
How does Hypnosis help get rid of this fear of public speaking? Well for starters, we look at changing the focus from: Fear of Public
Speaking to Confidence in Public Speaking.
And during
the Hypnosis sessions, I teach you the importance of your self talk. The
words you say to yourself can either sabotage you (cause fear) or move you towards success (being Confident!). A good example
is when a client tells me “I’m always afraid that I might be called upon to speak at our meetings.”
Did you notice the word “always” – well always means always – doesn’t it? Or they might say “it’s because when I was in the seventh
grade I had to do a book report, and I was so nervous I threw up in class!” OK that was then, this
is now. The past does not have to equal the future. And then I’ll teach you some basic self Hypnosis suggestions.
Here’s one –
“I used to feel nervous before giving a talk, and now I’m excited and confident.”
And of course we’ll do some Hypnosis during the sessions as well.
During that time,
we will address - lowering the self induced stress
- the importance
of being prepared
- boosting confidence
- and how to
rehearse the talk in your mind in a positive way instead of catastrophizing.
Hypnosis is great for helping athletes and business people develop
more confidence and it can be used to help you be more confident any time you get called upon to speak to a group –
whether it’s five or five hundred! My clients
have included top business executives, sales people, entertainers, pro athletes (they’re not afraid of a 300 pound line
backer, but are afraid of a microphone), management, high school and college students, teachers, clergy, physicians, even
therapists and other Hypnotists! And people just like you!

Thomas Perry came to
see me for help get rid of the horrible stress and fear he was having because of a work situation involving public speaking.
. He told me his talk was a month away and he was already obsessing about it.
He had a nervous stomach, couldn’t concentrate on his work, and had restless nights just worrying about it. . We worked together using Hypnosis to help him be prepared for the BIG day!
. During the Hypnosis sessions, I would have him see himself giving the
talk and feeling calm, yet excited and enthusiastic, and afterwards see and hear his co-workers (the talk was going to be
for people in his own company – yes, he was the boss) would come up and tell him what a great job he had done.
And how he would gracefully accept their compliments. . He came in for his last visit two days before the BIG DAY and told me he was ready.
In fact he seemed surprised that he was actually looking forward to it. . Several days later he called me and thanked me and told me it went better than expected
and now he felt like he could address a really large group if the opportunity ever presented itself. . Here are a couple of more tools I gave
him. During our sessions, he told me he enjoyed golf. It helped him relax.
I also asked him who would be a business person he thought would be a confident public speaker. He
said he admired Bill Gates and thought he would be confident no matter what the size of the crowd. . So I had him get a picture of Bill Gates (who just happened to be one of three people
on the cover of Time magazine December 26th, 2005) and tape it to his bathroom mirror so every
day he would see the picture when he was brushing his teeth and shaving and he would tell himself he had the confidence of
Bill Gates. I also had him put a golf ball in his briefcase so he could open the brief case and hold the
golf ball just before he was ready to give his talk. . You might ask – was that Hypnosis? Yes – that was a tool I use
in Hypnosis called Utilization – utilizing common things a person may see, hear, or touch to remind them of the suggestions
we discussed during our Hypnosis sessions. . And recently he came in for some Sports
Hypnosis to help lower his golf score!

I’ll tell you
a funny story about something that happened to me recently I’m sure would have caused much concern for some people. . I was asked to do a TV interview about Hypnosis for North Texas Now a television program
put on by the University of North Texas film department. I arrived early – I’m
always early – to make sure I could find the facility and find the people I would be working with. There
were a few delays. During that time, I met the guy who would be interviewing me, the producer, director,
several other staff, and even some of the other guests. One of the guests had his PR person with him.
The PR person is someone I have known for almost 20 years. I talked to both of them. . Later, I was sent a link to see the interview and realized something funny.
Would you believe that not a one of those
people noticed – or if they noticed, didn’t tell me – that one of my collar
buttons wasn’t buttoned? Now someone else would have been embarrassed, maybe even angry no one had pointed
it out. I just chalked it up to the fact that I got up three hours earlier than usual. Remember,
I don’t get up until 10 AM normally. To me it was just – Oh well, remember to check
the buttons myself next time – maybe the night before when I select the shirt. Did I experience Fear of Public Speaking? No – that hasn’t been a problem for me for
a long time. Besides, if I did, I could always use self Hypnosis or find a Hypnotist colleague to help
me with it, if I did.
