Did NFL Coach Mike McCarthy
use some form of Sports Hypnosis / NLP with the Green Bay Packers football Players the day before the Super Bowl? Yes, he
My guess is, he didn’t tell the athletes on the Team – “I’m going to Hypnotize you
now. Take in a nice deep breath, and let it out nice and slow.”
But he did use a very effective Hypnosis / NLP tool with them, whether he knew he did, or the football Players
knew he did or not.
What am I talking about here? You may have heard that the night before the Super Bowl game against the Steelers,
Coach McCarthy had his Packers measured for championship rings at the team hotel.
It’s been pointed out by General Manager Ted Thompson they
would have gotten an NFC Championship ring even if they had lost, but that’s not the point.
Would their ring size (not the size of the ring) be different if they had lost? No, but when you tell a Player
he’s being measured for his Super Bowl ring, it makes a big difference – especially since it is BEFORE the game
still wondering how the Hypnosis part comes in.
it is – a big part of Hypnosis is using the Imagination and getting the SubConscious Mind focused on a goal. Some people
call this “visualizing” – but the word “visualizing” is too limiting. It only suggests what
you can see.
Whether a Hypnotist (or Coach) directly suggests Imagining”
or only implies it by having an Athlete do something, it can be very powerful when done correctly.
By McCarthy having the Players sized for their Super Bowl rings in ADVANCE of the game, he was getting their
SubConscious Mind totally focused on the goal of winning the Super Bowl. Utilizing Imagination – not just Visualizing
– he was using one of the same tools I use in my office with my Athletes.
It doesn’t matter what age,
or sport they play – whether it’s hockey, golf, football, baseball, soccer, basketball, tennis – or any
other sport, when an Athlete is able to Imagine themselves winning, it increases their Confidence and Focus!
When people ask me to define Hypnosis, I tell them Hypnosis is simply receiving and accepting a Suggestion.
And a Suggestion can be made much more Powerful when more senses than just one are used.
I Coach my Athletes to understand they are getting Suggestions – Powerful / Positive, sometimes subtle
Suggestions as soon as they walk in my office and even when I’m talking to them on the phone. And when we do the “formal”
Hypnosis – having them lean back and Relax I repeat many of the same Suggestions I have already given them.
During the process of getting their measurements, McCarthy was employing Sight, Sound, and Touch. In Hypnosis
/ NLP terms, that’s “VAK” – Visual, Auditory, and Kinesthetic.
“You can't depend on your
when your imagination is out of focus.”
The Athletes were SEEING the measurement ring placed on their fingers. Now do you really think they were only
seeing the measurement ring? NO! Each Athlete was SEEING (visual) a Super Bowl ring on his finger – in his Mind.
They were all talking about it – so they were HEARING (auditory) the other football Players' excitement
and enthusiasm while they were doing it. And they were probably Imagining the comments they would be HEARING from others when
they were actually wearing it. The proud comments from their wives, girlfriends, parents, brothers, sisters, friends, etc.
were going through their Minds as well.
And they were FEELING (kinesthetic) the TOUCH of the ring. Again, do you think they were only feeling the
measurement ring on their fingers? No, of course not! They were Imagining how the real Super Bowl ring would feel! They could
FEEL the weight of that big ring as if it were really there at that moment!
I remember a twelve year old Baseball Player I was working with not long ago. We were working on boosting
his Confidence and Improving his batting. During the Hypnosis, I had him Imagine SEEING the ball coming towards his bat, HEARING
the sound of the bat connect with the ball, FEELING the bat in his hand and the Impact as it hit. Then Seeing the ball sail
through the air for a Home Run, Hearing his Teammates Excitement shouting at him, and Feeling the Energy of his body as he
ran around the bases and Feeling the Pride from his Accomplishment.
the end of our work together, he gave me a gift – a Baseball he Autographed for me. He told me I better make sure and
hold on to it because one day it would be Valuable when he was a Major League Player. You know what?
I’m betting he will. And when he does, I better be getting tickets to watch him play – especially when
he plays in the World Series a few years from now. And that Autographed Ball is in my glass case in my office proudly displayed.
"Your imagination is your preview
to life’s coming attractions."
Did Coach McCarthy call it Hypnosis? Probably
not. Did his Players realize they were experiencing Hypnosis? I doubt it. But then again, maybe a lot of them did –
those who use a good Sports Hypnotist and understand that Hypnosis isn’t what most people think it is.
Sports Hypnosis and NLP are Valuable tools for many Athletes of all ages and skill levels. And those who are
really Elite Athletes definitely use some form of Self Hypnosis and those who are really Dedicated to their Success find a
good Sports Hypnotist to help them.
you know an Athlete, or you’re an Athlete yourself who is serious about your sport, if you’re not using a Sports
Hypnotist, don't you think you deserve to have that Mental Edge? Or would you rather let your opponents have it? Obvious answer!
The biggest difference between a truly elite Athlete and one who’s almost there? The elite Athlete has
his or her Conscious and SubConscious Minds working together in sync- in balance - instead of in conflict.
Many times it’s
the little things that make the biggest difference. Imagine the possibility that this Super Bowl may have been won by Coach
McCarthy having the Players get the fingers measured in advance of the game! What if Sports Hypnosis / NLP could help
YOU improve Your Sports Performance? Would You be willing to use Your Imagination? I already know the answer.
If You're serious about improving, then the answer would be simple -- YES!
